As an Apprentice you are able to learn and earn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience in your job of choice whilst also gaining valuable work-based qualifications such as NVQs. Apprenticeships typically take between 9 months and 2 years to complete, depending on the type and level of apprenticeship. Over this period, you will be doing real jobs for real employers, getting paid a minimum of £2.50 per hour (Increasing to £2.60 per hour from the 1st October 2011 for new apprentices), and working towards an accredited work-based qualification at the same time.
The Skills Funding Agency (SFA) will pay the full cost of training if you are aged 16-18. Your employer may be expected to contribute to your training cost if you are older.
