Apprenticeships - Apprentices

How it works for apprentices

As an Apprentice you are able to learn and earn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience in your job of choice whilst also gaining valuable experience and knowledge that will help you with your future career.

Whilst on the apprenticeship scheme, you will be expected to carry out real work for real employers, getting paid a minimum of £95 per week if full time. You will be working towards an accredited qualification, so you will be given study time as well as expected to do some studying in your own time.

We will provide you with a mentor or Assessor, who will ensure that the training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. They will also help you with any difficulties that you come across.

You will put together a portfolio of work to show your Assessor when they visit you. Your Assessor will plan your training with you and help you with any additional support you may require such as literacy or numeracy help.

Your qualification will consist of different parts:-

  • Competency qualification, similar to an NVQ
  • Knowledge qualification, gained through passing a technical certificate
  • Literacy and Numeracy Key Skills
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities which covers such things as health and safety, equal opportunities and all the basics you need to know for work

What do the different levels mean?

Types of Apprenticeship:

There are currently two levels of Apprenticeship available:

Apprenticeships - Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE level):
  • a work-based learning qualification such as an NVQ Level 2,
  • Key Skills, usually at Level 1 to help you with literacy and numeracy if you need it
  • and in some cases a relevant technical certificate.

These provide the skills you need for your chosen career and allow entry to Advanced Apprenticeships.

Advanced Apprenticeships - Level 3 (equivalent to A-levels):
  • a work-based learning qualification such as an NVQ Level 3,
  • Key Skills, usually at Level 2
  • and in some cases a relevant technical certificate.

To start this programme, you should ideally have 5 GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship.
