Apprenticeships - Employers

How it works for employers

Apprenticeships enable workers to learn and earn at the same time, gaining hands-on experience in the work-place whilst also gaining valuable work-based skills and qualifications.

Typically apprenticeships take 6-12 months for a Level 2, dependent on the qualification itself and the apprentice’s prior experience and knowledge. Higher level apprenticeships will take longer.

We will advertise the position, do the initial interviews and short list the candidates for you to make your own choice from. You will give them some work experience to ensure they are the right person for you. Once you are happy, we will sign them up for the training.

The apprentice will work alongside your existing staff so you know they are doing things to your own exacting standards, and will also be visited regularly by us, their training provider for additional skills and to check their progress. The training can take place entirely in the workplace, or by day release. It’s what works best for you.

Employers need to provide a minimum of 16 hours a week paid employment, at a minimum rate of £2.50 per hour, for 16-18 year olds. Of course, full time employment is better and enables the apprentice to pick things up quickly and there’s nothing stopping you paying more than that if you wish.

As an employer you may already have staff who are good at their jobs but have no qualification to prove it? An apprenticeship might be a good route for you to explore with them, to show that you are committed to their development.

What are the benefits?

Apprenticeships are the proven way to train your workforce. They can help your company be more effective, productive and competitive by addressing skills gaps directly. They are designed to help your employees reach a high level of competency and performance.

Training staff helps develop loyalty and commitment. “Growing your Own” helps minimize recruitment costs, reduces complaints and improves motivation

Who are they for?

Apprenticeships are for people aged over 16 who are not in full time education. Although the majority are young people at the start of their careers, there is no upper age limit and are just as applicable for people who have been working for years or those who are seeking to start a new career.

What does it cost?

If the apprentice is aged 16-18 when they join the training programme, the training is fully funded, so the only cost to the business is the wages. For apprentices who are older, there will be an employer contribution towards the training. This contribution may include use of facilities, paid study time etc rather than just straightforward monetary contributions.
