This Apprenticeship can be applied across a broad range of sectors and job roles. Good managers and team leaders are essential to the success of any business, so the skills gained on this Apprenticeship are transferable and valuable.
Learning will be tailored to your industry, but it’s likely you’ll be responsible for the delivery of a service, or how other people carry out their work. You could be working as a shift leader, charge hand, section leader, team leader, floor manager, trainee manager, deputy manager, or supervisor.
On your Apprenticeship in Team Leading, you’ll learn the theories of team leading and how business works. You’ll manage your own workload; lead others; work effectively with other people; and learn how to get your point across through talking and discussion with others.
On the Advanced Apprenticeship in Management, you’ll be able to understand the theories of management, and how to source, understand, present and explain work related figures and calculations.
Depending on the focus of your job, you might learn other skills like how to allocate and check other people’s work; plan and implement change; manage a project or budget; encourage innovation; carry out operational plans; recruit staff; or develop customer service skills.
As a cross sector skill area the development of sufficient numbers of high quality managers and leaders is critical to success of all sectors of the UK economy. Latest figures show that there are over 4 million people employed in Management in the UK. There is a real need to encourage young people to progress through the management qualifications to address the future skills needs of organisations within the UK. The Team leading Apprenticeship and Management Advanced Apprenticeship should go some way towards addressing those present and future skills needs, providing excellent progression routes through a variety of work based and off the job training, and with a plethora of further and higher education options, such as foundation degrees and degree courses.
Those undertaking the Team Leading and Management Apprenticeship (Level 2) will be working in formal teams or groups, whether as team leaders/coordinators or team members. The apprenticeship is equally suitable for members of self-managed teams. They may work in factories, care homes, hotels, construction sites, offices, leisure centres or the armed forces. Wherever people and resources are employed, Team Leading apprentices could be working.
The Management Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) is aimed at supervisors and first line managers, and is intended for those people who need to maintain and develop the effectiveness and efficiency of the operations for which they are responsible by means of:
Employed status for the Apprentice is the preferred route and Advanced Apprentices must be employed unless there are exceptional circumstances (e.g. legal reasons). Job roles for apprentices must reflect the level of NVQ they are taking. Whilst it is acknowledged that Team Leaders and Managers work across sectors it is more difficult to identify job titles as these vary from sector to sector; a Team leader in one sector could actually be called a Manager in another. As an indication however, some job titles are listed below:
At Level 2 (Apprenticeship) job titles may include:
Job roles which an Advanced Apprentice (Level 3) is likely to fill are:
There are no formal entry requirements for this framework. Apprentices will have a variety of experience and will be working in a variety of sectors, although the majority will be over 19. The deciding factor in a decision to start an apprentice on the framework must be a favourable judgement of the ability to achieve the outcomes of the programme, and they must be in a job role that supports the completion of all aspects of the framework. This can be achieved through interview and initial assessment/testing. Apprentices should provide evidence of a strong interest in a career in management and have the ability to work effectively with individuals and groups.
The skills and attributes which are relevant to the occupations and sector are:
The framework for each Apprenticeship/Advanced Apprenticeship covers three areas; a Competence Based Element (e.g. NVQs), a Knowledge Based Element (e.g. technical certificates) and Key Skills.
Each NVQ consists of mandatory units and a range of optional units meaning that the qualification can be tailored to specific jobs roles and employer requirements to address skill gaps. These NVQs will be delivered by us at a time and place to suit you.
The Knowledge Based Element will be delivered and independently assessed through an additional award known as a technical certificate. The technical certificate ensures the apprentice can clearly demonstrate the underpinning and theoretical knowledge required by the sector and therefore helps to up-skill the apprentice and raise standards. The apprentice must complete one of the technical certificates listed in order to complete the framework.
The Key Skills levels state the minimum level required. If a learner has the ability they should be encouraged to achieve a higher level.

Whilst Apprenticeships are not time serving, MSC recommends that the average length of stay for Team Leading Apprentices is 15 months, and for Management Advanced Apprentices 30 months. However, these timescales are indicative only, as the pace of the apprentice’s progress will depend on a number of internal and external factors, personal ability, motivation, and received support.
The successful apprentice will receive an Apprenticeship Completion Certificate from the Management Standards Centre. This is separate from, and in addition to, those certificates awarded for the achievements of the individual components of the framework such as the NVQs and Key Skills.
The career pathways open to Team leading Apprentices and Management Advanced apprentices are, as a cross sector occupation, many and varied. A Team Leading Apprentice upon completion of the framework would have the following opportunities for progression:
