NVQ L2 in Supporting teaching and learning in schools

The NVQ L2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a nationally recognised qualification for teaching assistants. The course aims to develop confidence, motivation and practical skills in the role of a teaching assistant.

How does it work

The NVQ L2 is made up of both mandatory and optional units, allowing the candidate and their employer to tailor the learning to the skills required at their workplace. Candidates must complete the following units:

• Providing support for learning activities
• Supporting children’s development
• Helping to keep children safe
• Contributing to positive relationships
• Providing effective support for your colleagues
• And you’ll be able to choose two other units

They can then choose another two optional units from the following:

• Support literacy and numeracy activities
• Support and use of information and communication technology for teaching and learning
• Use information and communication technology to support pupil’s learning
• Observe and report on pupil performance
• Support children’s play and learning
• Contribute to supporting bilingual/multilingual pupils
• Support a child with disabilities or special educational needs
• Contribute to moving and handling individuals
• Support individuals during therapy sessions
• Support children and young people’s play
• Provide displays
• Invigilate tests and examinations

Who is this course for

The NVQ L2 is suitable for those employed as teaching assistants or those who are new to teaching and work under the direction of a teacher, coordinating with others. Level 2 qualifications are for staff who carry out a range of activities, some of which may be non-routine. They demonstrate a range of skills and apply knowledge and understanding in a number of areas.
