The NVQ L3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a formal qualification for experienced teaching assistants working in primary or secondary schools. The qualification meets the new National Occupational Standards for teaching assistants, furthers career prospects and opens up opportunities to a more diverse and responsible classroom role.
The course involves study days one day per month as well as observation in the workplace. Learners plan a programme of development and assessment with their assessor and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove that they are competent and knowledgeable in their work role. The NVQ comprises of six mandatory and four optional units, allowing the candidate and employer to tailor learning to the requirements of a specific workplace.

Level 3 qualifications are for those who work in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations using a range of technical skills. They carry out self-directed activities under guidance and may have limited responsibility for directing the work of others. They apply knowledge and skills in a range of complex areas. Learners must already be employed or in a practical placement for the whole period of the qualification.
